What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?
A Presuppositon of NLP is: The Law of Requisite Variety: Be unlimited in your ability to change until you achieve the results you want.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) represents a way of looking at human learning, it is an educational process as people are being taught to use their brain through learning about Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Neuro Linguistic Programming was first created by Richard Bundler and John Grinder in 1975. They modeled the works of Milton Eriksson, Virginia Satir and Fritz Pearls, all experts in their respective disciplines, which can be captured under communication.
In his book Using Your Brain for a Change Richard Bandler suggests most people are prisoners of their brains, as if they are chained to the last seat of a bus and someone else is driving.
He goes on to advocate that we need to learn how to drive our own bus. Give your brain a little direction, it won't run randomly and others will not find ways to run it for you.
So having modeled Eriksson, Satir and Pearls, Bandler and Grinder created a trail of techniques now commonly known as Neuro Linguistic Programming.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is about behaviour, change and creating excellence, supported by a set of principles, attitudes and techniques about real life.
It provides a platform for change, adopting or eliminating certain behaviours and provides you with the knowledge and ability to select your mental, emotional and physical states of well-being.
With Neuro Linguistic Programming you will quickly learn experience is a great teacher and identify how to use this awareness which will increase your options to create a fantastic quality of life.
Neuro Linguistic Programming provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence, but it also establishes a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are and what communication is.
At another level, Neuro Linguistic Programming is about self-discovery, exploring identity and vision.
Presuppositions of Neuro Linguistic Programming
1. Respect the other person's model of the world.
2. The most important information about a person is that person's behavior.
3. Behavior is geared for adaptation, and present behavior is the best choice available.
4. A person's behavior is not who they are. Accept the person, change the behavior. People are only doing the best they can with the resources they have available. You can forgive yourself now, and that means you can forgive other people, too.
5. The Law of Requisite Variety.Be unlimited in your ability to change until you achieve the results you want.
6. Behavior and change are to be evaluated in terms of context, and ecology.
7. People have all the ability they need to succeed. There are no unresourceful people, only unresourceful states.
8. Resistance in a client is a sign of a lack of rapport. There are no resistant clients, only inflexible communicators.
9. The meaning of communication is the response you receive.
10.The mind and the body affect each other.
11.The words we use are NOT the event or the item they represent. The map is not the territory. The map is the symbol for the territory.
12.I am in charge of my mind, and therefore my results,as you are in charge of your mind and therefore your results.
13.There is no failure, only feedback.
14.All procedures should increase choice.
15.All procedures should increase wholeness.
In the belief system of Neuro Linguistic Programming it is not possible for human beings to know objective reality. Wisdom, ethics and ecology do not derive from having the one 'right' or 'correct' map of the world, because human beings would not be capable of making one.
Rather, the goal is to create the richest map possible that respects the systemic nature and ecology of ourselves and the world we live in. The people who are most effective are the ones who have a map of the world that allows them to perceive the greatest number of available choices and perspectives.
Neuro Linguistic Programming is a way of enriching the choices you have and perceive in the world around you. Excellence comes from having many choices.
